Kings Oak Academy, Bristol

Kings Oak Academy in Bristol provides education for children from Reception right the way through to Year 11, combining both primary and secondary schooling in one campus.

They pride themselves on “creating deep, learning experiences” for their students, ensuring all pupils have access to high quality teaching and facilities throughout their time there.

The Requirement

With an emphasis on providing the best environment for children to learn and grow in a creative environment, we were tasked with installing a free-standing canopy outside their vibrant and colourful new canteen building, installed by Integra Buildings.

The idea was to ensure pupils had an external area for seating during break and lunch times, and a place that would provide both shelter from the rain and protection from the sun.

Our Solution

After discussing the brief, we installed the WeatherSpan® Free-standing Canopy, 32m x 5m, with a polycarbonate roof, as opposed to a glass roof. We cover the differences between polycarbonate and glass roofing for canopies in a separate blog post here.

Made from 100% non-corrosive materials, the canopy can hold snow loads up to 65kg per sqm and is thoroughly wind tested to ensure it can withstand the ever changing environment.

Furthermore, the gutters and downpipe were all integral within the frame of the canopy to complete the modern finish and ensure there were no trip hazards for students and teachers.

The Installation

We worked with Integra to install the canopy over the summer holidays and ensure no disruption to lessons. In addition to holiday installs, we also offer weekend installation on all canopies for schools!

The additional foundations required for a free-standing canopy were added with no issues, meaning the project was completed on time.

The Outcome

As you can see from the photos, the canopy adds itself to the colourful aesthetics of the outside of the building and all involved were very pleased with the outcome.
