Heltwate School

Situated in Peterborough, Heltwate School provides education for pupils aged between 4 and 19-years-old with moderate and severe learning difficulties.

Split across two campuses, the school prides itself on creating a “happy, stimulating, supportive, secure and positive environment.”

The Requirement

Due to overcrowding at the school, one of Heltwate’s campuses underwent a £6.8m expansion to alleviate the issue.

The project, ran by Kier Construction, included a new building complete with new classrooms, sensory rooms, hall, therapy rooms, hygiene rooms, storage, a reception area and a staffroom.

Furthermore, the proposal also included an outdoor covered play area and outdoor hard and soft play areas, while sufficient shelter needed to be provided for outdoor learning and socialising areas both outside classrooms and on the first floor balcony area.

Our Solution

After discussing our drawings at our free, on site no obligation survey, we supplied and installed three of our WeatherSpan® Aluminium Freestanding Mono-Pitch Canopies for the classroom area and four Weinor Awnings for the balcony.

The canopies, each measuring 7.8m x 3m, were fitted with our 1m high padded post protectors to create a safe space for outdoor learning and play, and a 16mm multi wall polycarbonate roof to ensure the space had protection from the elements throughout the year.

To ensure no misuse or accidental damage to the awnings, we installed a detachable crank operated system, with the operating handle stored away while not in use.

Both products were colour matched to the school colours to give a visually stunning finish to the school.

The Installation

We finished on site at Heltwate earlier this summer ahead of the new building’s opening for the upcoming school term.
