Case Studies
Tolworth School & Sixth Form, Surbiton
Based in Surbiton, Surrey, Tolworth Girls’ School & Sixth Form are proud to be the educational home for students from a wide range of communities, cultures and ethnic groups.
The campus has continued to improve their facilities throughout their 88-year history, to give the students and parents a school they can be proud of.
The Requirement
We’ve had the pleasure of working with Tolworth on two separate canopy installation projects, emphasising how they’re always striving to maximise their facilities.
On the first occasion, they were looking to increase their outside social and dining spaces to ensure students had an area to enjoy throughout the academic year, whatever the weather. We’ve seen this theme becoming increasingly popular on the projects within the education sector.
The second instance, however, was something we’d not seen a school use a canopy for previously. Tolworth were after a shelter that could be fully enclosed with lockable doors, to provide a safe locker space for their pupils.
The Solution
There are a number of great options for schools looking to maximise their social areas outside, and Tolworth settled on the WeatherSpan aluminium free-standing apex canopy for the first project.
The shape of the structure allowed for four triangular glass panels to be fitted at the apex, which allowed more natural light inside and complimented the surrounding area perfectly.
Fixed glass side panels were added to each end of the canopy with an entrance at one end, and both sides of the canopy were left open to allow easy access for students and pupils. The glass panels provide additional protection from the weather while keeping this open feel.
For the second project, we installed the WeatherSpan aluminium lean-to canopy with a polycarbonate roof and aluminium frame.
Measuring 28m x 6m, the canopy was fitted to the back of the building meaning students could access the new, secure locker space directly from the exit, as security was of paramount importance for this area.
We installed 8mm toughened glass panels onto the canopy structure and sourced the aluminium glazed doors and lock from local companies nearby, ensuring the locks had the same master as the rest of the doors in the school.
Both canopies have gutters and downpipes concealed within the frame, which adds to the smart and sleek finish.
The Outcome
Both projects were completed snag free before the new school term and, as you can see, have been put to great use on the Tolworth campus.
